Where does the name 'Tin Pan Alley' come from ?
It’s an expression from way back in the 1800’s. Back before the copywriting of music existed. In those days, composers would sit in their rehearsal rooms banging out new tunes on their pianos. Unbeknownst to them, unscrupulous hacks would sit outside in the alley and take down note for note what they were playing and try and sell it on as their own.
So, to protect their work from being ripped off, they paid people to stand outside in the alley and wallop a tin pan. This would create such a noise that no one could hear themselves think.
